Walking Group

Fourteen members of the Barmouth U3A Walking Group met at Nant Gwynant Car Park near Beddgelert on Monday 24th May for their most adventurous walk yet - the ascent of Snowdon. The weather was warm and sunny, but with a welcoming cool breeze near the top. George Mandow, the walk organiser had chosen the Watkin Path for the ascent, the steepest and one of the most difficult. The final track to the top was very sheer with the ground underfoot on Bwlch Cilau crumbling and eroded and we were reminded of the importance of adequate footwear and clothing in such conditions. But with extra vigilance, help from the more experienced walkers and dogged perseverance, everyone was delighted to make the summit and enjoy the wonderful views from the new café. It was decided to take the south ridge down, and again care had to be taken to manage the narrow track to Bwlch Cwm Llan. A cooling and well earned paddle in the stream near the waterfalls in the early evening sunshine marked the end to an excellent day out.
