U3A

The Barmouth U3A held it Annual General Meeting on Wednesday 12th May in Parlwr Mawr, Dragon Theatre. All the officers were re-elected. Mrs Wendy Bramley, who has retired from the committee, was thanked warmly for her excellent work as Programme Secretary by Mrs Evelyn Richardson, the Chairlady. Three new members were duly elected as Committee members.

The speaker for the afternoon was Mr Trefor Owen from Criccieth talking on " Traditional Clog Making " He had many examples to show from early times to modern day. As clog dancing has become a very popular event, especially at Eisteddfodau he is kept extremely busy. However, he expressed great concern for he future of hand made clogs as there are no young members of the society involved in the trade. The reason for this being no funding or grants for apprenticeships.

The next monthly meeting will be held on Wednesday 9th June at 2pm in Parlwr Mawr, the speaker will be Mr Rob McBride of the Woodland Trust, his subject being the "Ancient Tree Hunt project". The U3A currently offers some fourteen different groups covering a whole range of interests. For further information please contact George Mandow on 01341 422946.

Viewing

The artist, A K Brazier, sketching on the quayside was a familiar sight to many of the older Barmouth residents. Primarily working in water colours he captured many of the landscapes and buildings around the town and further a field Some of his most interesting works include some of the vessels which used to be seen in the harbour such as the Dora - the last steam ship to visit the port and the now forgotten herring fleet.

Born in 1894, A. K. Brazier was brought up in Barmouth locally known affectionately by his second name 'Keeley'. From Barmouth grammar school he went on to an apprenticeship at Coalport China Works- producing some now very sought after pieces. However, his career as a ceramic artist was cut short by the advent of World War I. After returning injured from the front in 191 7 he went onto study at the Birkenhead and Hammersmith Schools of Art.

Returning to settle in Barmouth in the 19.30s A. K Brazier exhibited many times in Wales and London, his pictures were often found hanging at the Royal Cambrian Academy and the Royal Welsh Academy exhibitions. In 1959 he founded the Meirionydd Artists Society and was chairman for many years. People will be pleased to hear that there will be an opportunity to view or buy his paintings on 21st and 22nd May at The Gables, Mynach Road Barmouth from 1pm till 6pm.
