Lit and Deb

The Society met of 4th March in the Parlwr Mawr. There were 19 people present. The speaker was Mr Keith O’Brien and Derek Gladstone was in the Chair. Mr O’Brien’s subject was, “ The history of Rhiw Goch”. As a resident of Trawsfynnydd, who was born and bred there, he was in an ideal position to speak about Rhiw Goch which was situated only a few miles from the village. He covered the ever changing history of the house from its 12th Century beginnings to the 17th century additions for the visit of the Prince of Wales and its acquisition by the Army as a training camp in 1905. Futher modifications were made by the Army in 1939 and, eventually, it was converted to a restaurant whilst still retaining its Grade 2 listed status. Rita Gladstone thanked the speaker for highlighting such an important site ” on our own doorstep”. Members are reminded that the A.G.M. will be on 18th March.

Women’s World Day of Prayer

The service in Barmouth took place in Christchurch - this year at 11am on Friday 5th March and hosted by Siloam Chapel. The theme of “Everything that hath breath will praise the Lord” had been chosen by the women of Cameroon in West Africa and to set the scene music from Cameroon was played as women from the Barmouth Churches gathered. Representatives took part in the prayers and readings led by Iris Pugh and with Llewela Edwards as organist. The address on the theme was given by the Rev’d Brian Evans.

Bonfire

As part of this years fundraising for the ever successful Bonfire and Fireworks event there are a number of events that will be taking place in the next few months.

Speed Art

Local artist Kevin Snow ran an event called "Ready Steady Art" for Barmouth Youth Club some time ago, a great success that produced some brilliant work. He has now been persuaded to repeat the event for Grown ups. It is a fast, fun event that will be held in the Arts Room of the Dragon Theatre on Wednesday 17th March at 7-30pm. It is a great spectator event but if you would like to join in the fun you will have a chance to create a masterpiece in minutes. The £6 entry charge includes a glass of Guinness or Irish cream. You need no previous experience or skill, just the desire to have fun.

Y Not Drop In for Art

Working in collaboration with Hafal the "Why Not Drop In" will be offering users the opportunity to work with a community artist on three Thursdays, 11th, 18th, 25th March, There will be opportunities to try a variety of art materials and techniques each week such as printing, collage etc. to create beautiful, interesting effects for art making. The sessions have been funded by Snowdonia National Park. Users of the Drop In can take part any time during a normal session and do not have to stay for the full period. The Drop In is open at Communities First in Station Road from 10am till 2pm on Thursday. The group is designed for adults, anyone who fancies a chat and a cuppa is welcome.

Oldest ever

A very special event is coming at the end of March. On 31st March, Nellie Roberts, formerly of the Grange Barmouth will reach the age of 103. On this date she will become the oldest ever Barmouth person on record.

Gymdeithas Gymraeg

The Welsh Society celebrated St David’s Day on Wednesday 3rd March with a dinner at Hendre Coed Isaf. The guest speaker was radio and T.V. presenter Dai Tomos, who soon had members laughing with his interesting and very amusing talk. He was introduced and thanked by John Williams, President of the Society, who also thanked the staff of Hendre Coed for the delicious meal. There followed a generous raffle. The last meeting of he season will be on March 31st when Penri Jones’ party from Parc will entertain.

Educating Rita

The very accomplished Paradisi Theatre Company from Criccieth, who last year produced a brilliant version of “Barefoot in the park” are coming back to Barmouth’s Dragon Theatre on 19th and 20th April with their new production of Educating Rita. Although an amateur group the standard of their productions rival those of professional companies . You can order tickets from the box office by calling 01341 281697.
