Barmouth and District RNLI Fundraisers Flower Festival

The Barmouth and District RNLI Fundraisers are having a Flower Festival in St. David's Church Barmouth on 26th - 29th August. The theme of the festival is the RNLI and so we are looking for any memorabilia associated with the RNLI in general or Barmouth in particular which could be loaned for the occasion. All artefacts will be treated with the greatest respect and returned immediately after the festival has ended. Dunkirk and Barmouth

Regarding the recent Dunkirk Anniversary Remembrance, a few local residents would no doubt be surprised to learn that Barmouth has its own Dunkirk survivor. Doug Price of Orielton cottage, Panorama and now residing in Hafod Mawddach, was one of the thousands who were rescued from the beach after wading out and waiting to be picked up. Doug was taken into one of the rescue boats and transferred to the passenger ship Montrose which then landed the troops at Ramsgate. He still remembers how difficult it was trying to climb up the very high rope ladder onto the ships deck and seeing some men falling off into the water with tragic consequences. He still has a faded photo of himself in uniform, which he kept in a cigarette tin that suffered water damage, but it is still cherished. Doug, together with his late wife Nellie, and her parents Mr and Mrs Dudley had a market garden business at Orielton gardens Panorama and were well known in the town for their produce and flowers.

Saturday Fun Day

The community Fun day will be held in Talbot Square and in Llys Talbot ( former youth centre) and will open at midday on Saturday 12th June. There will be lots of community groups showing what they do and offering you chances to take part in fun and games. There will be a children's play room with organised activities for the under 8's, Barmouth Football club will be selling merchandise, browse the car boot sale, try your luck on the raffles and tombola. Mawddach Rotary will be giving free blood pressure readings and there will be plenty of live music throughout the day. If you still do not know why the National Theatre of Wales are doing a major project in Barmouth this summer go along and talk to Marc Rees who is the mastermind and creator of what promises to be a unique experience for local people.

Community Car

If you are interested in being part of a group that will look at how a community car scheme could be set up please contact Denise or Martin in the Communities First office. At the meeting last Tuesday the suggestion by a local resident was discussed in some detail. Previous investigations had not proceeded because there had been insufficient residents involved to set it up, but, if enough people are prepared to get together and organise a service the Partnership will provide support and guidance.

Llanaber Coffee Evening

On 26th May, St. Mary's Church Llanaber held their annual coffee evening at the Jesuits house. In little over an hour everyone had enjoyed a chat and refreshments whilst helping to raise £480 for Church funds. As always the organisers were most grateful to all who supported the event and helped make it a successful and happy occasion.

C.A.B. opening in Barmouth

For several years Barmouth has hoped for a Citizens Advice Bureau branch in the town where people could have face to face discussions about a range of problems. Communities First are pleased to announce that starting on Monday June 14th there will be a fortnightly drop in service in the old Council offices in Station road between 10am and 1pm. On the alternate weeks the service will visit Blaennau Ffestiniog. This service will be supplemented in the near future by a computer kiosk that will give access to C.A.B. services five days a week. The machine will be located in the old payment office behind Communities First on the ground floor. Both these services are accessible to people with mobility problems. The service is sure to be well used as C.A.B. have seen a dramatic rise in demand for the assistance they provide, particularly in relation to debt and personal finance though they cover a range of issues including housing. The Drop In service will not require an appointment but at busy times you may have to be patient and wait a little time to be seen.
