The President then welcomed the new committee and presented a token of appreciation to the retiring secretary, Val Vine, in recognition of her sterling work in past years Best wishes were sent to all who were absent through illness. The new secretary, Doreen Gill then read the Minutes of Nov. and Dec. meetings which were duly confirmed and signed. Doreen read the County News Letters of Dec. and Jan. while members noted forthcoming events: Darts at Bala 6.30 Feb 1st and Scrabble in the Ship Hotel Dolgellau, 2pm March 1st. The President introduced the speaker for the evening Maureen Owen who has spent 30 years of her life in Barmouth although having being born in Liverpool; hence the title of her talk this evening "In my Liverpool Home" .She began by reading some poetry from her father, Jimmy McGovern's, book "In my Liverpool Home" the prose and poetry were reminiscences of his childhood, the hardships living a cramped and unsavoury life on the docks but with a great community spirit which went on even through W. W.2 and all of it in living memory, as too is the fact that Liverpool is now a Heritage City of Culture. The talk finished with members joining in the song printed on Maureen's T-shirt In my Liverpool home. Ann Williams[Vice President] proposed the vote of thanks to Maureen after which members were served with refreshments prepared by Pam Payton, Mary Smallwood, and Ann Williams and thanked by the President. B.E.C.G.

A meeting was held on Thursday 28th January on Wern Mynach with the Countryside Warden to discuss the groups objectives for 2010. As the members walked round a number of ideas were put forward. A great many sections of the community use and enjoy the wildlife area and it was suggested that another picnic table be put near the ship. It was also suggested that a plot of land could be used and plantec by the primary school children as an outdoor classroom wiht benches, bird table erected and bluebells planted. Small boards with information about the importance of various habitats for wildlife was another idea( The loss of which would ultimately affect future generations)e.g. rees beds filter out toxins in ponds and ditches cleansing water. Over 130 varieties of wild flowers have been identified on the Wern and over 21 species of birds recorded there one summer. This winter flocks of Fieldfare andRedwings arrived to feed there. The tree planting on 5th December 2009 was a success with over 30 people including the Mayor turning out. This was a B.B.C. scheme and the 150 allotted trees were planted in one hour The trees planted with the Cyd Coed grant are doing well but members were disappointed that the tree planted in memory of Sophie Palmer , by the Guides, has bee destroyed yet again. It is lovely to see so many children playing on the ship. The paths are ideal for mums with pushchairs, wheelchair users and dog walkers. 2010 is Boi-diversity Year, the group would like to encourage more people to be interested in diverse and natural areas in Barmouth. If you would like to join the group please leave your contact details at the Communities First office in Station Road and they will be passed on to the Secretary.

Although much of his talk was devoted to the life and times of Lord Bulkeley, Mr Fairlamb presented amusing and knowledgeable accounts of the large number of archives which he consulted ;whilst researching the book, ranging through the Parliamentary Archives at Westminster, the College of Arms, the Bodleian Library at Oxford to local archives in the Caernarfon Record Office and the Beaumaris Town Council. In the end, however, he drew a picture of a man who, to quote Mr Fairlamb's own words, “retained his fundamental patriotism, family commitment, compassion to the disadvantaged, support of good causes and loyal duty to King and the Constitution” in a truly fascinating story. The Barmouth Literary and Debating Society were host to Bermo Arts and Cymdeithas Gymraeg for the “Three Societies Quiz”, held on Thursday 28th January in the Arts Room of the Dragon Theatre. This friendly light hearted event was thoroughly enjoyed by all the participants.
