B.R.A.

BRA send a Happy New Year message to you all. Barmouth Residents Association will hold its next meeting in the Min y Mor Hotel at 7pm on the 1st February where sandwiches will be provided. Do you have ideas of how the Residents Association could better help your community?? Do you have any queries or problems in regard to your housing or environment that the association may be able to help you with?? Do you have a project in mind that you need help getting off the ground ??? No promises but if they can help they will or at least point you in the right direction. The Residents Association was formed several years ago now and has been instrumental in helping resolve many of the problems that occur in a community like Barmouth. The committee feels that it is now time to change the format of the Association and so would like to take this opportunity to invite anyone interested to go along for a bite to eat and an informal chat to put their heads together and find the best way forward for 2010. Old and new members will be very welcome they meet in the pool room, go along and see if you can make a difference.

Barmouth and Dyffryn United Football Club

The Barmouth and Dyffryn United Football Club enters 2010 with great enthusiasm, despite the cold weather, and wishes all its players and supporters a happy and successful New Year. With the Club's First Team now second in the Welsh Alliance League, the Reserve Team heading towards the top of the Safeflue Caernarfon & District League Second Division, and the success of the Junior Teams, the Club looks forward with great expectations. In particular the Club's First Team players are now preparing for their next match, a tough Barritt Cup contest against Welsh Alliance Leaders, Rhydymwyn, on Saturday, 16th January at the Wern Mynach ground, weather permitting. Given such overall optimism, a meeting of the Club's Management Committee on Monday, 11th January, endorsed proposals for major developments to Club facilities to improve conditions for players and supporters. Emphasis will be placed upon extending the area of the junior pitch to create two full size pitches, the development of all weather pitch facilities for both senior and junior teams to reduce the disruption of fixtures caused by adverse weather conditions, and the provision of better stand and car parking facilities for spectators. As well as Club funds and grant applications, the Management Committee is arranging a number of fund raising events to finance these initiatives. These will include a Golf Tournament at Dolgellau Golf Club on Sunday,24th January, and a Horse Racing and Casino evening at the Buffs Club, Barmouth, on Saturday, 27th February. All Club players and supporters will be welcome at these events. For further details contact Wil Huntley, Chairman (079127 48875) or Brian Wood, Club Secretary (01341 280103).

Meet the Police

An open meeting will be held on 19th January at 7pm, in the Dragon Theatre at which anyone in the community will be able to talk about issues that are of concern. If you are not able to go to the meeting you can talk to P.C. Gareth Jones who is the Community Beat Manager for Barmouth and he will raise your issue on your behalf. It is an opportunity to tell the Police what they are getting right, to ask if particular issues could be tackled in a different way or to find out how the community can help reduce crime.

Lit and Deb Society

As ois tradition, the first meeting of the New Year is the “Vice Presidents Evening”. Mr Michel Benson introduced a well known Barmouth figure, Miss Allison Williams, Manager of the Dragon Theatre. After Mrs Rae Cleaver, acting President led the meeting in a silent tribute to former members Mary Clegg and Betty Pierce, both of whom had died recently. Allison, who herself appeared on stage in the Dragon at the age of six, told the audience about the events during the last 50 years of the Dragon Theatre. The theatre opened in 1959 after members of Bermo Arts, the local amateur dramatics society, purchased the old Congregational Chapel in Jubilee Road, converting it to a theatre. The Theatre then produced a variety of shows: opera, ballet, and plays including the famous Gilbert and Sullivan plays remembered by some of the older members of the audience. Extensive rebuilding with the aid of National Lottery was carried out in the last few years to make the Dragon one of the leading Arts venues in the area, hosting over 60 events in the last year. A vote of hanks was given by Mrs Val vine. The next meeting will be held on 14th January and will be a “Member’s literary evening” presented by Val Vine.

Saturday offers a second chance to see the current production from Bermo Arts entitled “Happy Christmas Shirley” it is a Christmas comedy by Louise Roche . The play starts at 7-30pm and tickets will be available at the door.
