Barmouth News - 2nd August, 2010

Where future events and specific information are mentioned, these are highlighted for easy reference.

Entertaining

There are two very different but highly entertaining plays on every week at the Dragon Theatre in Barmouth, Blood Brothers on Monday nights and Fawlty Towers on Wednesday nights, throughout the month. From Monday 2nd August the foyer box office will be open from 11am – 1pm every weekday. Alternatively, seats can be reserved by phone at any time on 01341 281 697 – leave a message if necessary and they will call back to confirm your booking.

Job shop

If you have a vacancy that is either seasonal or permanent and want to find someone local to till the vacancy you can advertise for free on the community jobs board in Communities First office window. Similarly if you have skills that you want to sell or are looking for a particular type of job you can also advertise in the same way. Just call in to the office , give the details and a notice will be created in a uniform style that is easy to read. This facility may also be extended to the web site if it proves popular. It is a new idea that is being tried to help local people find jobs with local employers.

Better and Better

If you have not visited Barmouth station in the last week you need to go and see what is happening. Every week there seems to be yet another improvement. In addition to the planters and hanging baskets, extra large area photos had been added along with a painting by a local artist. All this has now been joined by local information boards that tell visitors and residents about the regular events of the town along with information about the local history. Local businesses and individuals are putting in time and money to make Barmouth a really attractive place everyone can help by keeping an eye on the developments, picking up litter and pulling out weeds. It is a proven fact that vandalism thrives in neglected areas and disappears in well kept ones.

The Commitments

If you used to dress in flares or a mini skirt to go out on a Saturday night then the live Soul and Motown show on Saturday 21st August, with 8-piece band The Conmitments is for you. If not, this show is a trip into another world of music that will show you what your parents used to dance to. It also features Tony Scarth as Tom Jones. It promises to be a lively and atmospheric night! The dragon theatre is the venue and tickets can be bought in advance at the box office or ordered by phone on 01341 280979.

Moving on

Tracy and Yvonne have worked side by side in Sophisticuts and built up a loyal following over the years. Yvonne has now decided to branch out and is renting a chair in the In Style salon on the High street where she is hoping to develop some services that will be new to Barmouth. She is wished every success in her new venture.

Coffee morning

Friends met at Hafan Deg on Friday last for a Coffee Morning at which hey raised £60 for MacMillan Cancer Support. Everyone is thanked for their generous donations to this valuable support charity and for supporting the event.

Freshfields

The volunteers at the Freshfields animal sanctuary shop are appealing for items of good clothing to sell in the shop, they are desperately short of stock at the moment and ask you to think of them when clearing your wardrobe. They are also appealing for additional volunteers to help man the shop. They have also sent out an appeal for a mobile phone, if you have one that works they would be most grateful. Their efforts go to support the animal rescue centre to aid abandoned animals.

U3A

Members of the Barmouth U3A had a monthly gathering with a difference when they met on 14th July. The theme for the afternoon was "Thanks for the Memory" focusing on the 50s and members were asked to bring with them a small memento that might evoke memories of that decade. The afternoon began with the group singing the Bill Haley and the Comets' hit "Rock around the Clock", (without the jiving in the aisles this time). We were treated to stories about engagement rings and wedding dresses, congoleum and coronations and some not so happy memories of 11 plus examinations. There were recollections of young married life in Liverpool and photographic memories of early nursing years. We even had a slide rule demonstration. It was fascinating to be reminded of transport in the 50s when Crosville buses carried us locally and one member read out a touching letter written to her pen friend in 1953. Scrapbooks took us back to a 'golden age' when children had more freedom yet felt more secure, an innocent time when climbing trees and playing cards were the pastimes. When radio programmes included Two Way Family Favourites with Jean Metcalf for Forces in BFPO 15 and weekends were spent dancing in the Tudor Café with the Junior Leaders from Tonfanau. The whole afternoon was thoroughly enjoyable - as were the delicious scones, served with strawberries and cream.

Bonfire and Benevolent funds

Emergency Services personnel, who are responsible for organising the Barmouth community bonfire & fireworks event, held an Open Day at Barmouth Fire Station last Saturday. The event was well attended and as well as various emergency vehicles being on show a cake stall and raffle helped to raise £399 towards the November community event and Fire & Rescue Benevolent Fund . Emergency staff involved would like to express their thanks to Mark Thomas and staff at Barmouth Co-operative store for the generous help and support shown to them. A main raffle prize generously donated by Barmouth Co-op was won by Ricky Morris, Barmouth Fire & Rescue Service.
